NBA Daily Digest: Dybantsa No. 1, Knicks flip picks, Reaves stays

There were no NBA games on the June 24 scoreboard, so the league's news cycle moved fully to the 2026 NBA Draft and the first wave of offseason roster business. ESPN's dated scoreboard lists no games for June 24, while NBA.com's draft hub has Round 1 complete and Round 2 scheduled for June 25 at 8:00 a.m. GMT+8.12

The first five picks came off the board without a major top-end trade. The Washington Wizards selected wing AJ Dybantsa at No. 1, followed by Utah Jazz guard Darryn Peterson, Memphis Grizzlies forward/center Cameron Boozer, Chicago Bulls forward Caleb Wilson and LA Clippers guard Keaton Wagler.2

NBA.com's broader first-round takeaway was that college players dominated the night: nine of the first 10 picks were freshmen, and all of the first 20 picks came from college programs.6 That makes this class feel less like a global mystery board and more like a one-year college evaluation test.

The official NBA trade tracker is now active. It lists three completed draft-night pick trades: the Grizzlies-Thunder-Pistons move, Denver's No. 26 deal with San Antonio, and Sacramento's move back into the first round at No. 29.8

The Knicks' draft night was the more aggressive asset play. NBA.com reported New York moved out of the first round through separate deals involving the Lakers, Mavericks and Suns, ending up with No. 47, four future second-round picks and cash considerations.9 For a champion facing second-apron math, that is a clear choice to prioritize flexibility over another guaranteed first-round salary.

Milwaukee's reset is now visible on the draft board. ESPN reported that the Bucks agreed to send forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami in a deal that cannot become official until July 6, then drafted guard Brayden Burries at No. 10 and will acquire forward Nate Ament at No. 13.10 General manager Jon Horst avoided trade specifics but repeatedly described the night as part of a build.

One non-draft contract note also landed: Yahoo Sports reported the Los Angeles Lakers plan to sign guard Austin Reaves to a four-year, $185 million max contract, with a player option for 2029-30.11 If finalized, it keeps a proven on-ball guard in Los Angeles before the open market gets crowded.

With no games on the board, there is no new game-status injury report to sort through today. The relevant health notes are attached to draft fits.

San Antonio Spurs forward/center Jayden Quaintance fell to No. 20 after missing most of last season while recovering from an ACL injury, according to ESPN's Round 1 analysis.5 Yahoo added that the Spurs are expected to bring him along slowly, while center Tarris Reed Jr., acquired at No. 26, is the more immediate frontcourt addition.7

NBA.com's second-round preview starts with Duke guard Isaiah Evans, North Carolina center Henri Veesaar, Arkansas guard/forward Meleek Thomas and Cincinnati forward Baba Miller among the best available names.12 The top of Round 2 also has practical team context: New York currently opens the round at No. 31, Memphis sits at No. 32, and Brooklyn's No. 33 pick is reported as part of the Minnesota trade path.2

For tonight's viewing, the cleanest frame is simple: Washington got the headline prospect, Milwaukee and New York showed where their roster math is heading, and San Antonio used two first-round slots to protect Victor Wembanyama with size. The next 30 picks will decide which teams still have cheap rotation bets before free agency begins.
